“Give us our 11 days!” On the 2nd September 1752 people in Britain went to bed as normal. But when they woke up the next morning it wasn’t the 3rd September but the 14th September instead. Britain had switched from the Julian calendar which had been in use since 400BC to the Gregorian calendar and in doing so had ‘lost’ 11 days.
